Diabetes: Social Security Disability
Diabetes is a disorder in which the pancreas cannot produce adequate insulin to move glucose from the blood to the cells of the body. Cells do not respond properly to the insulin produced and the glucose builds up in the blood then overflows into the urine and passes out of the body.

I was diagnosed with type 2 diabetes last year. I also have hypertension (3 yrs) and asthma (4 mths). I was being treated for bronchitis but it was so severe and after finally seeing a lung specialists he diagnosed me with asthma. I use symbicort 2x a day and I also have a rescue inhaler for attacks as well. My hypertension causes my heart to stress and I take a pill for it also. I wonder if I'm eligible for SSDI.

i have type II diabetes and am self employed i am 52 years old and can not find any health insurance can you help in that area thank you lonna meadows
Lonna, This is why the health care reform law is so important for people with disabilities because it will make it easier for people with pre-conditions to get health insurance. We can't help you find insurance but you may be able to get some answers at healthcare.gov.
I have been Type 1 Diabetic since Nov of 2000. It seems my condition keeps getting worse. I have been hospitilized at least once a year since i was diagnosed, mostly with ketoacidosis. I do not have medical insurance and can not afford the dr bills. The last time i was in the hospital i was told that the diabetes is now affecting my nervous system. I really need help with this. Alot of people have told me to apply for disablility and i have once but nothing came out of it and i was just wondering if you could tell me if you think i would qualify for disability
I have a few problems i have arthritis of my legs and my knees and my lower back i also have type 2 diabetes have had it for 5 years also have asthma and i have copd i would really like to know if there is any hope for me
I was diagnosed with type 2 diabetes in December 2000 and in 2002 I was in a car accident and i am blind in one eye.i am always tired and my legs and feet are swollen and i don't work.I can't live off of my husband's retirement.i haven't applied yet i was just wondering if I qualify for SSDI and I have no medical insurance.
Roxanne, Your work history is a major factor in being insured for disability benefits. If you paid into Social Security and have five-years-worth of work credits earned within the last 10 years you could be eligible for SSDI. Please check the Eligibility section of this Web site for more qualifying criteria information.
I have been on disability for renal failure. After transplant they said I could recieve 3 yrs. of benefits. My transplanted kidney is working good, however I am having problems with diabetes.Numbness and pain in my feet/hands. I've also had eye problems. Will I be able to keep my benefits?
Gene, It sounds like SSA is planning to review your case after a three-year time period has passed. The Continuing Disability Review (CDR) is routine. If they determine that your condition continues to make it impossible for you to work, your benefits will continue.
I was diagnosed with Type II Diabetes on 11/2005. I was told that since about 1999, That I may have been pre-diabetic. In 2000 or 2001 I was first diagnosed with I.G.A. Nephropathy (Kidney's), now recently I was diagnosed with Arthritis (Rheumatoid and Osteoarthritis), which I now have a vascular necrosis of the Femoral heads (hip joint). Everything seems "normal" now but some days, well are extremely painful to where I can not go to work. Can I still work and clam disability in TX?
Robert, You can work and apply for disability benefits from Social Security if you are only making at or below substantial gainful activity, which is $1,000 a month. Please realize that one of the main eligibility requirements for getting approved for Social Security disability benefits is to have a qualifying medical condition that is so severe you are unable to work at any job. It sounds like you have the physical capacity to continue working. So, even though you have qualifying medical conditions, the level of severity is considered as well as your work capacity and your age. The process to prove disability is very complicated. So, if you choose to explore your options further, get disability advocacy help. It would be advisable to talk to one of our Eligibility Consultants to better understand your options at this time. Please call 866-347-2910.
I AM A TYPE II I HAVE PROBLEM WITH MY SUGAR BEING OUT OF CONTROL. MY VISION IS KIND BAD AND LATELY I HAVE BE HAVING PROBLEM WITH MY RIGHT THUMP. IF I USE THAT HAD TOO MUCH MY THUMP STOP ME FOR USING MY RIGHT HAND AT ALL. COULD I APPLY FOR DISABILITY?
Belinda, We need to know more about you to give you an answer. I suggest calling 866-347-2910 to talk to an Eligibility Consultant. There are many factors involved in assessing if you could qualify for disability, such as having a medical condition that clearly interferes with your ability to work at any job. It would be best to call in for a better evaluation of your situation.
I was diagnosis with Type II diabetes in march of 2009,but i was always getting gen.diabetes when i got pregnant with all three of my children. I am always tired and cant seem to keep my blood sugar levels below 200 .i am on medications but i cant work because i am so tired ,and it hurts to stand for along period of time
I have type 2 diabetes since june of 2010 I have no job i'm in a work program which has cut my hours to 16 a week. I have been having trouble with my legs going numb and my hand are starting to have the same problem,. I was wandering if I can get ssi disability.
Jane, If you meet all the eligiblity criteria for SSDI and you believe your condition is so severe it could last 12 monhs or longer or result in death, you could qualify. SSA is very strict in its approval process. You must have the work history, support from your doctors, strong medical history to support your condition and, based on your age, be unable to retrain for different work. For a better assessment of your eligibility it is advisable to call toll free at 866-347-2910 to talk to an eligibility consultant.
Hi, I'm 34 years old and I have type2 diabetes, neuropathy, a benign brain tumor and recently had a mild stroke (lacunar infarct) I'm currently waiting to receive my decision from social security. I've lost coordination, and my speech is impaired, my equilibrium is not stable. My AC1 level is 11. If I am not approved what steps should I take? And do I meet the criteria for benifits?
Greg, There are so many factors involved in deciding a disabiity case. SSA's decision is based on analyzing the severity of your condition and how your condition impacts your ability to work. They take into consideration your age, educational background and your ability to retrain for different work. You also must have paid into Social Security and you must have a recent enough work history to be insured for disability benefits. It is very hard to predict what SSA's decision will be. Should you get denied, and you disagree with SSA's reasons for the denial, you have the option to appeal. You have 60 days from the denial date to make that decision. Approval rates, historically, are higher in the Appeals stage, particularly at the hearing level. Good luck.
I am type 1 diabetic for 45 years now. I have limited eyesight due to retinopathy (nearly blind in right eye, and according to eye doctor 20/30 in left, although I can't read the paper without magnigying glass). I can't drive in the dark, so I feel like a prisoner, needing to leave work early in winter, and relying on my wife to take me places. I also have 2 stents, neuropathy with constant tingling - although I can walk fairly normal. I suffer from depression. I also suffer from extreme fatigue, and have alot of trouble maintaining my sugar level, sometime mornings over 500,other times less than 30, with no explanation of why. I am taking so much insulin due to having insulin resistance, and sometimes, for whatever reason, I only need a minimal dose, but take the mega doses to help keep the sugar in check to avoid any further complications. I also believe I have issues with mental clarity. I feel I sometimes don;t understand things that were once simple to me ( I am a financial analyst, and get confused the last couple of years 2ith simple requests. I am working, and trying to keep my difficulties from my boss, but I have already gotten a poor performance review I feel due to not understanding things as I did in the past. I am also on 9 different medications, plus insulin. With all of these difficulties, do I have any chance of qualifying for disability?
Steve, If you think your medical condition has progressed to the point where it is seriously impacting your ability to work at any job, then you do have a chance. But, because you are still able to work to earn above substantial gainful activity of $1,000 a month, you won't qualify now. To get approved for disability your condition must be expected to last a year or result in death and be so severe it is preventing you from performing any job based on your age, education and functionality. The process to get disability benefits is very complex and can take a long time. Perhaps you should call our toll free number 866-347-2910 to talk to an Eligiblity Consultant who can better explain your options.
i am a 30 year old type 1 diabetic and was recently told that i am also a type 2 diabetic i also have depression as well as anxiety i have not been able to work since Feb of this year but my income sources are running out do you think it is possible that i would qualify for disability?
I have Diabetes Mellitus, COPD, High Blood pressure, Hep-C, severe nerve damage to lower right spinal region which causes chronic pain to inside of right leg. My last day of work was Sept. 30, 2010. Last insured date is: March 31,2010. I now believe something is wrong with kidney functions as I have troubles with pain during going. I do believe I am so full of sugar it has been overflowing into my kidneys and damaging them and reason why the pains. The meds I am on, keep me dizzy and constant back and forth to bathroom and back pain causing pain in my right leg keeps me from working as well as hard to bend over, hard to walk. COPD keeps me very winded. Unable to work because of that. I do not have the breathing capability I had before. The diabetes keeps me in constant fear of not eating right foods and keeping sugar levels under minimum. I have left messages on the phone to call me back but no response. I have an appointment for a phone interview with Social Security for an application for disability on the 10th, which is tomorrow. Please use my email to contact me, as I need representation. Thanks

I have been Type 1 Diabetic right before my 18th birthday, I am soon turning 25. I have not worked in over a year. My sugars seem to get out of control do to stress at work, and also go low several times a week ( which prevents me from working continuously throughout the day.) I would like to know if you think I would possibly qualify, because this disease stops me sometimes from my daily functions. Thank you.
i was diagnosed with type 1 diabetes in 2005 and it has since gone into type two diabetes to where i require three diffirent pills and two types of insulin. being a truck driver and having to take insulin disqualifies me from truck driving. i have numbness in hands and feet. i also have glaucoma from diabetes ,high blood pressure and tone deafness. all of this is continuesly causing me to fail my d.o.t. physical and without it, i can not work. i am also suffering from sleep apnea in which i require a cpap machine or i dont get a good nights rest. i am a veteran being treated by the va but at my age they refuse to do any surgery so i can lose weight. is it possible i may qualify for benefits.
Hi Steve, Thank you for your comment. I would say the first step is to get an evaluation from one of our eligibility consultants. You’ll be asked some questions about your condition and how it interferes with your ability to work. You’ll also be asked about your work history to help determine if you are insured for benefits. This free consultation will also give you some guidance on what your next steps should be. Also,if you are not currently receiving 100% in VA disability, our sister company Alpha, can assist you in appealing your current disability rating for a higher percentage. I hope you’ll call us at 866-761-5942.
