SSA Announces Open Government Plan
The Social Security Administration has released its Open Government Plan. Two months ago SSA asked that the public contribute ideas as to how SSA could support President Obama’s “Transparency and Government” initiative. SSA’s expectation was to release the plan in April. The plan is now available at www.socialsecurity.gov/open.
According to SSA’s press release, the plan includes three major initiatives that demonstrate SSA’s commitment to open government principles:
- Spanish-Language Retirement Estimator – a tool to help the Spanish-speaking public calculate retirement benefits
- Online Service Enhancement – to make it easier for people to find information and services on the SSA Web site
- Online Life-Expectancy Calculator – a retirement-planning tool
These initiatives will be implemented by the end of 2010.
The Open Government Plan Web page also provides easier access to SSA’s information on applying for disability benefits, including how to track a pending disability claim.
SSA has not finalized the Open Government Plan and is asking that the public continue to contribute ideas to help SSA further improve services. Feedback is welcome through May 19.
